Man sets himself on fire after wife refuses to return home due to absence of toilet

Failing to persuade his wife to return home, a man set himself on fire at his in-laws’ house in Firozabad district on Monday night, reported Times Of India.

The incident was reported from New Ambedkar Nagar colony under Ramgadh police jurisdiction. The man suffered 60% burns and is battling for life at a government hospital.

According to police, Robbie, a resident of Nagla Guluriya area in Hathras district, came on Firozabad on Sunday to take back his wife Ponnam. After a heated argument with his wife and in-laws a day later, he rushed to the kitchen, took out a gallon of kerosene and poured it upon himself to set himself ablaze.

Mahendra Singh, Robbie’s father-in-law, said, “Since there is no toilet at his house, my daughter refused to go back with him. Earlier, she had complained to him about her uneasiness and the embarrassment she has to endure while defecating in the open, but he did not pay heed to that. Even on Monday night they had the same argument. But this time Robbie took the extreme step.”

SHO of Ramgadh police station, Ravinder Dubey, said, “The victim was taken to Agra government hospital by his in-laws. Since no written complaint was filed, we haven’t lodged any FIR.”
