Two persons hanged themselves in separate incidents on Wednesday. While a 32-year-old man ended his life in Bhandup allegedly because he was not being allowed to meet his daughter by his wife, who left him three months ago, a 30-year-old newly married housekeeping staffer at a service apartment killed himself in Oshiwara. In the Bhandup case, police suspect that the deceased, Abhijit Shinde (pictured), who was a dancer and rapper, had been suffering from depression ever since his wife left him.
“Shinde’s wife had been living at her mother’s place since the past three months. She was not allowing Shinde to meet their two-year-old daughter, which upset him badly. He had been depressed over the past few days,” said a police officer. Shinde is suspected to have hanged himself from the ceiling fan at his home around 6.30 am. As the flat’s door was open, a few neighbours went to check on him and found him hanging. The police were immediately alerted. Shinde was rushed to a nearby hospital, but was declared dead on arrival. A note found from the spot said that the money in his bank account should go to his daughter. “We registered an accidental death report and handed over the body to the deceased’s family members after conducting a postmortem,” said Ramesh Khade, senior inspector of Bhandup police station. In the Oshiwara incident, police are trying to find out the reason behind Prahlad Mohanty’s suicide. Hailing from Odisha, Mohanty had been living in the city for the last three years. He used to work at the service apartment of a company and shared the staff quarters with two colleagues. His co-workers were the first to find him hanging from the ceiling fan, with the noose fashioned out of a towel, around 2.30 pm. They took him to Cooper Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. “We came to know from his colleagues that he got married only three months ago and was very happy. We don’t know what prompted him to take the extreme step,” said an officer at the Oshiwara police station.
